Best of 2007 (with some 2008 thus far thrown in)

The music reviews section is looking a little meek with no posts since 2006. I really do still buy music so here's what I think is worth owning. Mostly it's another list of reissues.

Chessie - Manifest. Stephen and Ben went away for years and twiddled knobs. I thought they were a bit looney to spend so much time on each track. Then I heard it. Now I get it. Results! Technically this came out in '08 but, it should be getting much more attention. You people are going to regret sleeping on this when you finally do hear it.

Fabric 34 - Ellen Allien. This is 3 years in a row now that Ms. Allien has made a record that I've thoroughly enjoyed. Tireless.

Burial - Untrue. Moody with a big 'M", frightening, interesting. Dub-tastic. Yes, please.

The Clientele - God Save The Clientele. "Bookshop Casanova" was the hit of last summer. This album shows what expert production can provide. These guys just keep getting better. And James loves Bailter Space almost as much as do. And they tour endlessly. And they are fine upstanding citizens.

LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver. Listened to this a bunch just like the rest of the world.

Nord Express - Loveland 1995-2005. Excellent collection of Nord material including tracks from nearby Maple Shade where they unplug the fridge just in case the wiring of the house might be carrying a buzzing sound to the amps. Very happy that this material made it out into the world.

Peter Bjorn and John - Writer's Block. One of the few live shows I saw last year. Very energetic. Made me want to listen to 7"s non stop. Well constructed.

Radiohead - In Rainbows. Yeah, yeah, fucking great. What else is new.

A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Scribble Mural Comic Journal. Noise. Blessed noise.

Sarandon - KIll Twee Pop!. May they continue to skronk on. No song over 3 minutes yet so much to offer. Awe inspiring. Also, officially makes me a label mate with a former member of Big Flame. I feel cooler by proxy.

The Long Blondes - Someone to drive you home. Songs you can sing along to in the car at top volume and make other drivers wonder what the hell that guy is yelling about.

Hope to see you at the show.

UPDATE: A review of the show by Mark Jenkins for the Washington Post.
Best of 2006

I haven't had the time to write my own best of 2006 so I recommend that you take a gander at Papa Slumberland's list.

The highlights for me from that list are:

Lily Allen - Alright, Still (Regal, UK)

Burial - Burial (Hyperdub, UK)

Herbert - Scale (Accidental, UK)

Rhythm & Sound - See Mi Yah 12" remix series (Rhythm & Sound, Germany)

v/a - CD86 (Castle/Sanctuary, UK)

Really that's just the stuff I own off of Mike's list. I intend to get it all eventually. I also enjoyed:

Yo La Tengo - I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass (Matador)

The Concretes - The Concretes in Colour (Astralwerks)

Peter, Bjorn, and John - Writer's Block (Wichita)

Ellen Allien and Apparat - Orchestra of Bubbles (Bpitch Control)

Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out of This Country (Merge)

Thom Yorke - The Eraser (Xl Recordings)

Lorelei w/Masha Qrella & Sean McArdle Oct 25th @ DC9

Lorelei have started practicing again and will appear with Masha Qrella on Wednesday October 25th at DC9 in Washington, DC. Masha released "Unsolved Remained" back in Feb. 2005 on Morr Music. Lorelei are a bunch of old guys who haven't played a gig in over ten years. Sean has been described as "dark folk" (I don't know if that is accurate or not). Should be fun!

Here is the Washington Post write up on the show.

Oh yeah, we have a myspace page now. What is the world coming to? It does however have some redeeming factors including some old and odd ball tracks from the Davis White collection (early demos, live tracks, etc.).

My favorite music from 2005

Ellen Allien - Thrills. From the moment the wiggly tremolo sounds of the first track, "Come", begin it is clear that Ellen Allien's record is the perfect blend of minimal techno and modern pop music. Moody and intriguing throughout I cannot rate this album high enough. Allien has a distinct sound that is immediately warm and ingratiating. It will at turns remind you of your favorite New Order record (though not as much as the Radio Dept.; see below), your favorite 808 State track, the ongoing saga of your life. Good driving music as well. A billion stars.

The new issue of Diversion Video magazine is out and it is fantastic. Most of this issue is shot in Japan and includes the King of Ground competition. For the last three issues of the video magazine Bobby Carter has been kind enough to feature a few LU tracks. We didn't know anything about flatlands when we started contributing tracks but, we've been learning and I really look forward to each new edition.
